Headaches & Migraines

The hidden source of your headaches: why the solution starts at your shoulders and hips.

Headaches can be debilitating, often stalling your productivity and draining your energy. While many people reach for a bottle of aspirin, the reality is that most tension-based headaches are not a problem with the head itself, but a result of structural imbalances lower down the chain. At Fortitude Sports Therapy, we look at the body as a complete system to find the structural source of your discomfort.

The Foundation: Your Shoulders and Neck

Think of your shoulders as the foundation for your neck and head. When that foundation is unstable or out of position, it directly dictates the alignment of everything above it. Most headaches originate from these common shoulder imbalances:

  • Uneven shoulder height. If one shoulder sits higher than the other, it creates a constant lateral pull on the cervical vertebrae.
  • Protraction (forward shoulders). If one or both shoulders are pushed forward, it forces the neck into a “forward head” position, straining the delicate muscles at the base of the skull.
  • Shoulder tilt. When a shoulder is tilted forward or rotated, it creates an uneven tug-of-war between the muscles of the upper back and the neck.

When your cervical vertebrae are thrown out of position, specific muscles are forced to pull on the head to maintain balance. If your headache feels like a dull, achy, or throbbing pain, it is most likely coming from these shoulder-driven imbalances. This constant strain causes chronic inflammation in the muscles that lead directly into the head and neck.

The Kinesiology Connection: It Starts with the Hips

Here is the kicker: what controls your shoulder position? Your hip position. The body is a kinetic chain where every link affects the next. When the hips are out of alignment, they act like a tilted foundation for a house, pushing the spine out of its natural curve.

This spinal shift changes the resting position of your shoulders, which in turn impacts the position of your head and neck. If we only treat the neck without addressing the hips and shoulders, the headache will inevitably return because the structural “tug” is still there.

The Solution: Correcting the System

The goal of our clinical massage therapy and structural assessment is to bring the body back into a better position by correcting these muscular imbalances. We don’t just “rub where it hurts.” We work to:

  1. Realign the hips, setting a level base for the spine.
  2. Level the shoulders, removing the mechanical pull on the cervical spine.
  3. Reduce inflammation, using targeted massage techniques to calm the muscles once they are back in their proper position.

The result is a system that works exactly the way it was designed: move easier, breathe better, and live without the distraction of pain and dysfunction.

Goodbye headaches. Goodbye inflammation. Welcome back to a high-performance life.
