Frozen Shoulder

Why your body locked this joint, and how to safely thaw it.

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is one of the most frustrating and debilitating conditions a person can experience. It typically begins as a dull ache and progresses into a rigid "locking" of the joint that makes simple tasks (like reaching for a seatbelt or putting on a coat) nearly impossible.

While the medical focus is often on the "capsule" or the lining of the joint, we have to ask a deeper question: why did the body decide to lock this specific door?

The Body's Emergency Brake

Following the time under tension rule, your body is always looking for ways to protect itself. When there is chronic inflammation or a significant functional deficit in the shoulder complex, the brain may trigger a "guarding" response. It essentially pulls the emergency brake, tightening the muscles and tissues to prevent further injury.

In our modern lives, we often spend hours with rounded shoulders and internally rotated arms. This chronic position creates a massive muscular imbalance where the front of the body is too tight and the back is too weak. Eventually, the joint loses its ability to glide, and the "freezing" process begins.

The Kinetic Chain: It's Not Just the Shoulder

To thaw a frozen shoulder, we must look at the neighbors that influence its position. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which means it is also the most dependent on its foundation.

The Mid-Back (Thoracic) Connection: If your mid-back is stiff and lacks the ability to extend or rotate, your shoulder blade (scapula) cannot move correctly. When the scapula is stuck, the shoulder joint is forced to work in a cramped space, leading to the friction and inflammation that trigger the freezing response.

The Neck and Nerve Flow: The nerves that power your shoulder muscles originate in your neck. Postural imbalances like "forward head" can compress these pathways, leading to weak stabilization and a joint that feels "unstable" to the brain.

The Hip and Core Foundation: Your ability to reach overhead starts at your feet and hips. A hip misalignment can tilt your entire ribcage, forcing one shoulder to sit in a compromised position that makes it more susceptible to locking up.

A Comprehensive Path to Thawing

Treating a frozen shoulder requires a delicate, functional approach. Aggressively forcing the joint through a range of motion it isn't ready for often backfires, creating more inflammation and more guarding.

At Fortitude, we focus on the "why." We use therapeutic massage to calm the nervous system and address the soft tissue adhesions, but the real breakthrough comes from our customized treatment protocol.

We work to realign your hips, spine, and shoulders so the joint finally feels "safe" enough to let go. By addressing the root muscular imbalances throughout your entire kinetic chain, we help you regain your range of motion and return to a life of fluid, pain-free movement.
